It's, therefore, worth investing in a beautiful wood table with lots of character and patina. Auctions are great places to find these.

The inlaid game board top of this table makes it so interesting. This is a George III game table, and tilts! It measures 32 inches in diameter which would make it a nice hall or library table, or nice dining for two. This is Lot )331, and has an auction estimate at Brunk of $500 - $1,000.
I had a table like this when I had a very small apartment in New York City when I was in college. It was perfect for sitting against a wall with a few decorative objects on top, and then a good sized dining table when I entertained. This would also make a nice table for a dining room to open as a serving station. This one measures 43 inches long and 35 inches wide when opened up. This is Brunk Lot 0205, and has an auction estimate of $100 - $300.
This lovely mahogany Regency style table would make a wonderful dining table, or a center table in a room large enough. It measures 48 inches in diameter which sits 4 easily or 5 in a pinch. This sold at a Stair Galleries auction in Hudson New York for $200 off an auction estimate of $800 - $1,200.
I love round tables for their practicality, and as the best dining table shape to promote conversation over the meal. They don't take up the space, and often can do double decorating duty. They are easy to find at auction, and some times terrific bargains are to be had!
